Best tips for sticking to your diet – Use a mix of internal and external motivation

No one likes the idea of a diet and because of this, many people falter on their way to getting their dream bodies. Even when armed with all the right information, it’s still very easy to get discouraged about the whole thing and quit.

So here are a couple of things I’ve found that will help you stick with it.

You may not need all of them but some might scream out to you as a good idea and if that’s all it takes to keep you on path, that’s good enough.

Use a combinations of internal/external motivators

What ever it is, it’s important that you keep focusing on that end goal. Keep the end in prestige, make it meaningful. make it yours. A lot of people will waiver and just go

‘Ah screw it, I’m not bothered about that anymore’

and because their end goal has been diminished, so will their efforts.

If possible, tie your goal with the expectations of someone else.

That’s not to say you are doing it solely for them, but think more along the lines, they’ll benefit considerably if you complete your goals.

This is the perfect example of having a balance

You train for a marathon for self pride and fitness
(internal motivation)

You are also raising money for a good cause

(external motivation)

You often find in situations like this, people are willing to perform incredible feats in the name of others, even when their bodies and minds seem to give up.

So even if you don’t feel like doing it, you can’t back out due to losing face and letting people down.

This should form part of your diet mission statement I believe.

  • You already have the ‘what you are going to achieve’  part
  • You already have the ‘How you are going to achieve this’ part
  • Now all you need is the ‘Why you are doing it in the first place‘ part sorted

Give yourself some motivation you can’t get out of, mostly because of a good cause, it’s amazing how more likely you are to stick with it.

Simply pick a charity or a cause that is close to you, and get out there to ask people to sponsor you on your journey.

So now, you’re not only on the road of changing yourself but you are on the road of changing the lives of others as well.

What can be better than that?

Oh yeah, money. Lots and lots of money.

. money-on-a-plate-300x200 .

If you can’t manage an ounce of human kindness, simply make a crazy wager you can’t afford to lose (like a month’s salary) and watch that weight fly off.

Ideally make this wager with someone competitive to perform the same task (i.e. lost 20 pounds). You also have to bet big. Nothing less than £500 or a $1000 dollars with the loser forking out the cash.

Literally put your money where your mouth is.

Literally, if someone said lose a pound a week for a year and win a million dollars, who would give up this chance, no wonder shows like the biggest loser with huge cash incentives end up making incredible changes to people’s lives.

Money talks people, money talks.
