DRILLED INTO YOUR BONES

They taught me I had potential

They taught me I had options

They taught me I had  purpose

They taught me I could make a difference

They taught me I was wanted

.

They taught me how to get up early

They taught me how to be tidy and organised

They taught me how to best manage my time

They taught me how to earn the respect of others

They taught me how to finally be the Man I knew I could be

.

They taught me to respect authority

They taught me to never give up

They taught me to always be ready

They taught me  to be brave in the face of adversity

They taught me  how to overcome any obstacle

.

They taught me how to run a marathon with a 100 pound rucksack on my back

They taught me how to do push ups till my knuckles bled

They taught me how to swim a kilometer of open water in under 15 minutes

They taught me how to finish an assault course under intense physical pain

They taught me how to turn my body in to a well oiled  machine

.

They taught me how to strip and reassemble an SA80 assault rifle blindfolded

They taught me how to use a bayonet efficiently with Krav Maga

They taught me how to control my breathing in order hit a target 800 metres away

They taught me how to gain ground in a firefight

They taught me how to become the perfect weapon

.

They taught me how to withstand torture

They taught me how to function without food or sleep

They taught me how to blend into my surroundings

They taught me how to use the environment to my advantage

They taught me not only how to survive but how to thrive on the battlefield

.

They taught me how to lead

They taught me not to let my unit down

They taught me to bring out the best in my fellow comrades

They taught me we could achieve more together than on our own

They taught me I had brothers in arms

.

They taught me Sun Tzu’s the art of war

They taught me what it meant to serve with honour

They taught me there was something more important than myself

They taught me to be loyal to my countrymen

They taught me that besides what others think, there’s still plenty worth fighting for

.

In Essence

They taught me everything I needed to know about being a soldier.

….

Of all the things I am grateful the military taught me….

I wished they’d also taught me how to forgive myself…

How to forget it all…
